In recent years, Macao residents have paid more attention to a healthy lifestyle, which sport has become an important part of. With the rapid growth ofMacaosociety and its population, there has been an ever-increasing demand for sports space. In order to provide residents with more sports facilities, the Macao Sport Development Board (the Board) has continuously and actively been working in different ways to add more sports venues to satisfy the demands of residents.
Taking the opportunity of the relocation of the University of Macau, the Board officially took over the University of Macau Sports Complex in the second half of January 2015, renaming it the Northeast Taipa Sports Centre. The Centre includes several sports venues such as indoor stadium and open-air courts. In order to speed up its opening for public use, the Board performed some basic maintenance work right after the takeover of the sports facility before opening two squash courts and open-air tennis courts for public use in the first phase from 18th March. The indoor stadium is currently undergoing a series of maintenance and renovation works and will be made available with the rest of the sports pavilion for public use once work is completed.
With the operation of the above sports facility, the Board hopes to further expand the sports venues inside the existing ‘public sports facilities network’ and optimise its relevant services. It is hoped that the addition of sports facilities will encourage more residents to engage in sport and physical activity, thus cultivating the long-term habit of exercise and promoting a healthy leisure lifestyle in order to realise the Sport for All concept of ‘Let’s Exercise for Our Health’.
