Macao International Marathon, which had been held for 29 years, was one of the finale sport events in 2010 and also one of the signature sport events of Macao. Every year, many long-distance runners from all around the world were attracted to participate in the Marathon. This year, the “Macao Galaxy Entertainment International Marathon 2010”, organized by Macao Sport Development Board and Macao Athletic Association and sponsored by Galaxy Entertainment Group, was held in the Stadium of the Olympic Sports Centre on 5th December. The starting ceremony was presided by Vong Iao Lek, President of Macao Sport Development Board, Mr. Lam Hin Fu, President of Macao Athletic Association and Mr. Francis Liu, Deputy Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group.
The race was divided into marathon, half marathon and mini marathon and the race course covered across the Cotai area and the Macao peninsula. A record high number of more than 4,600 athletes from 54 countries and regions participated in the race.11 male athletes were especially invited, including Mykhaylo Iveruk of Ukraine, the winner of last year, Yin Shun-Jin and E Xiang Suo Nan of China, Yuriy Zhirkov of Russia, Peter Kemboi and Stephen Kwelio Chemlany of Kenya, Tekeste Nekatibeb Nurelign and Gebregziabher G/Slasie Abrha of Ethiopia, Lino Barruncho of Portugal, RI Yong Ho of North Korea and Kuok Chi Wai of Macao. 9 female athletes invited included Roman Gebre Gesesse of Ethiopia, the winner of last year, Sun Juan of China, Gishu Mindaye Tilahun and Yenealem Buli of Ethopia, Rose Kerubo Nyangacha of Kenya, Eugenia Danilova of Russia, KIM Chol Sun and KIM Jong Hyang of North Korea and Hui Long of Macao. Furthermore, a number of long-distance runners from Portuguese-speaking countries were also invited to participate in the race, including Heneka Bandara and Baddegamage Kumara of Sri Lanka, Adriano Meneses, José Ferreira of Brazil, Francisco Clemente e Sharnifa Dacosta from Goa of India, Ilídio Vaz of Sao Tome and Principe, and José Lourenço of Angola.
