The 2011 Spring “Free Sports Ground” Ball Games Competition held its finals on 1st May at the Free Sports Ground at Canal dos Patos. The competition was organized by the Macao Sport Development Board and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, co-organized by the Macao-China Basketball Association and the Macao Football Association.
The 5-week competition was unveiled at the Free Sports Ground at Areia Preta on 3rd April. The competition attracted 1,724 players from 248 men’s basketball teams, 54 women’s basketball teams and 129 men’s football teams. The competition groups included: Men 3-A-Side Basketball: Senior/Open/Junior/Advanced; Women 3-A-side Basketball: Youth, adolescent; and Men 3-A-side Football Open/Group A/Group B. In addition, there were also matches for individual skills on basketball and football.
The competition was well received and supported by many ball game fans. The intense and exciting matches also attracted a large number of residents in the neighbourhood to attend and watch. Through this competition, the organizer had achieved the goal of creating a platform to allow the ball-loving residents from all neighbourhoods to exchange and sharpen their skills. Furthermore, it also served to promote social harmony and unity as well as encourage the residents to regularly participate in sport activities in their spare time.
