As the society develops, family problems are arousing the concern of the international community. In 1993 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided that the International Day of Families is to be held on May 15 every year. The purpose is, through the various related events held each year, to prompt all countries to continue valuing family as the basic unit of society, and to pay attention at the family situations around the world, as well as to promote family harmony, welfare and progress.
In response to the “International Day of Families”, the Macao Sport Development Board, the Social Welfare Bureau, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau and the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macao, jointly organized the “Family Cycling Tour and Carnival Celebrating the International Day of Families”, in the hope of promoting the importance of harmonious family for the mass public and to encourage the residents to endeavor to construct harmonious families.
The event comprised of games stalls, family cycling tour, captivating stage performances and competition such as the “Coziest Family Look” and the “Best Cheering Squad”. The event attrached the participation of 150 families. The planned cycling tour was canceled due to rain, , but did not dampen the enthusiasm of the families. Many of the families who came well prepared, wrapped their children in raincoats, braced the rain and together cycled a short distance around the Sai Van Lake Square in support of the event.
Guests attending the activity included: Huang Huagai, Director of the Social Work Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR, Iong Kong Io, President of the Social Welfare Bureau, José Tavares, Vice President of the Macao Sport Development Board, Lam Mei Sio, Representative of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, and Ieong Tat Vei, Deputy Director of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macao.
