The 26th Summer Universiade took place between 12 and 23 August at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre. Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the 26th Summer Universiade open at the opening ceremony held on Aug 12. The Shenzhen Games attracted more than 7,800 athletes from 152 countries and regions from across the world, competing in this 12-day event for the 306 gold medals in 24 sports programs at this year’s Universiade.
The Macao delegation comprised of 89 members and participated in 8 of the 24 sports programs, namely, athletics, badminton, fencing, swimming, diving, taekwondo, table tennis and chess.
Although the Macao athletes did not win any medals but their performance showed their perseverance, tenacity, courage in the face of competition and willingness to do their best, representing the good sports spirits of the MSAR’s young athletes. In competing with the world’s best athletes, Macao delegation opened up their visions, learned from their counterparts, created friendships and widened their horizons. At the same time, Macao athletes were able to perform at their best, for instance, female athletes broke two Macao swimming records in 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke events.
