In order to provide more opportunities for elders to participate in sports activities and to gather, exchange their experience of physical exercise and share the fun of it, and to promote the development of sport for all. The 2011 Macao Elderly Sports Day, jointly organized by the Macao Sport Development Board and the Macao Elderly Sports Association, co-organized by the General Union of Neighborhood Associations of Macao, the Macao Federation of Trades Unions, the Women’s General Association of Macao and the Macao Polytechnic Institute Seniors Academy, was held at Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion on 18th September. More than 2,000 people attended this activity.
The elderly participated in several recreation and sports activities. After participating different activities, the elderly could share their delights with their families about sports and exercises. A physical condition assessment booth wae set up particularly for the elderly to enhance their awareness of the essential of physical exercises that a healthy body and self-confidence can be achieved through sports activities. During the event, the organizers arranged Taiji Double Fan, Taiji Sword-play, Square Dance, Softball, Yangko Dance, Line Dance, sign language exercises, and Hydrangea Dance performances to enhance the residents’ knowledge and their interest towards sports activities.
The organizers hoped that the Sports Day could enable the elderly, their families and the general public to jointly share the joys of exercising and better promote the concept of “sport for all for better health”. The event also sought to encourage the elderly to actively participate in sports activities and cultivate a healthy habit of persistent exercising to maintain a healthy body. Furthermore, it enriched the leisure life of the elderly and enhanced their quality of life in building a harmonious and healthy society together.
