Venetian Macao Open, jointly organized by Macao Sport Development Board and Golf Association of Macao, was staged at Macao Golf & Country Club from October 11-14. This year, the tournament had been authorized by the Asian tour and the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel signed up as the Title Sponsor of Venetian Macao Open for the first time.
Since the inauguration of the Macao Open in 1998, this annual sporting event has attracted a number of well-known golfers to participate. As in preceding years, world-class names were found in the tournament this year and 7 players participated were ranked in the top 10 on the Asian Tour Money List of 2012. They were Anirban Lahiri, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Bangladeshi Siddikur from India; Prom Meesawat from Thailand and David Lipsky from USA. Other star players included Ian Woosnam, a Welsh professional golfer and champion of US Masters, title holder Chan Yih-shin from Chinese Taipei and two-time Macao Open champion Zhang Lian-wei from China. The big-name international players competed for a total prize money of US $750,000.
After days of fierce competition, Indian player Gaganjeet Bhullar, who led the competition from the beginning, was crowned the championship.
Through the media platform of Asian Tour, this year’s Venetian Macao Open was beamed live on Asian and European channels, Golf Channel, Australia’s Fox Sports Channel, and reached over 200 nations and 650 million homes. In addition, live scenes and highlights of the match were also shown on Eurosport (Asia), Golf World and Asian Tour Weekly. The widespread broadcast of the tournament has helped in the promotion of Macao.
