The 14th Special Olympics World Summer Games took place between 25th July and 2nd August 2015 in Los Angeles; about 6,500 athletes representing over 165 countries and regions competed in 25 sports events such as aquatics, badminton, basketball, football, bocce, bowling, cycling and powerlifting. Macao’s delegation of 78 athletes, the largest ever, competed for awards in eight sports - namely, athletics, swimming, badminton, bowling, table tennis, bowls, golf and canoeing.
The Special Olympics World Games is a global event with a vision to build independence and self-confidence for people with intellectual disabilities through sports training and competition, empowering them to embody the spirit of the Special Olympics - ‘Let me be brave in the attempt’. This year’s Special Olympics theme is ‘Reach Up’, representing respect, acceptance, compassion and care for people with intellectual disabilities as well as the spirit of inclusive sports.
At the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, the Macao delegation achieved marvellous results in athletics, swimming, badminton, table tennis, canoeing, bowls and golf, winning 35 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze medals in all.
