On 18th February, the “2015 Macao Sports Photography Competition” hosted by Sports Bureau and co-organised by the Photographic Society of Macao, unveiled its exhibition and award ceremony at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. The first prizes of the two theme groups Heroes and Competitions and Fitness Smile go to Duet by Kuok Kim Va and Happy Time by Tang Kai Lon, respectively. More winning photographs were displayed at the hall of the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion from 18th February to 20th March.
A total of 532 photographs, under the themes of Heroes and Competitions and Fitness Smile, were submitted for the competition. After professional review, top 3 winners and another seven distinctive entries were awarded for each group. The award ceremony was held on the opening day of the exhibition, with José Tavares, the then President of Sports Bureau, Au Ping and Ma Chi Son, Vice Presidents of the Photographic Society of Macao, and Sports Committee members presenting the awards.
Kuok Kim Va: Look for the focus of your photograph
Duet, the first prize winning photograph by Kuok Kim Va featuring a local football league, shows a rare glimpse with one player hitting a shot and the other one executing an overhead strike. When asked about the secrets behind taking good photos under the two different themes, Kuok Kim Va gave credit to finding the right focus for each category of photos – for Heroes and Competitions, the photographer needs to capture the facial expressions and movements of sports players, whereas for Fitness Smile, a leading character should be highlighted among the crowd, to showcase their emotions and stories at that moment.
Tang Kai Lon: Photos express feelings
Tang Kai Lon is both the first prize winner of Fitness Smile and the third prize winner of Heroes and Competitions. His winning photograph, Happy Time, was taken at the Family Sport Day last year, depicting a family working together toward one goal. Tang Kai Lon is an enthusiast of sports photography. He believes that the essence of sports photographs is to capture the instantaneous expressions on a player's face, to showcase their efforts, hardworking and feelings via images, thus touching the heart of the beholders.
