Under the theme of traditional Chinese wushu (martial arts), the new sports brand event Wushu Masters Challenge was held from 11th to 14th August, featuring traditional wushu performances, wushu forum, International Taolu competition, Dragon and Lion Dance Championship and Wushu Parade. Traditional wushu has a long history with Macao. The diversified four-day event enabled residents and tourists to experience what exquisite wushu is, and to understand and promote the spirit of wushu and meet friends on wushu.
Wushu Competition between Ng and Chan as Overture
The Wushu Masters Challenge is organized by Sports Bureau and Wushu General Association of Macau, co-organized by Macao Government Tourism Office, Cultural Affairs Bureau and Cultural Industry Fund, and supported by International Wushu Federation, Wushu Federation of Asia and Chinese Wushu Association. The grand opening ceremony took the classic event of Wushu competition between Ng and Chan as overture, demonstrating Macao's profound cultural tradition in wushu with performances of masters from different schools and dragon and lion dance.
Presiding guests invited to the opening ceremony included Dr Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Xu Ting, Director of the Department of Education and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R., Ip Peng Kin, Chief of Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Pun Weng Kun, President of Sports Bureau, Ung Vai Meng, President of Cultural Affairs Bureau, Cheng Wai Tong, Acting President of Macao Government Tourism Office, Chan Weng Kit de Noronha, Chairman of Wushu General Association of Macau, wushu star Zhang Jin, Liu Beijian, Secretary General of International Wushu Federation and Chen Guorong, Vice President of Chinese Wushu Association.
Diversified and Exciting Activities
The large-scale grand event of wushu covered and contained everything in the sport that it included “the International Taolu Competition”, “Suncity Group Chinese and Western Sanda Masters Championship” and “SJM Dragon and Lion Dance Championship” where the greatest wushu heroes from across the globe competed in, wushu masters demonstrations held in Amizade Square, Iao Hon Market Garden, Senado Square, insightful wushu forum that promoted the wushu spirit, Wushu Parade (featuring wushu characters, lion and dragon dance and Chinese mythological creatures) passing by the World Heritage attractions and streets and alleys, among others. Moreover, there were cultural and creative booths set up at the Tap Seac Square to promote traditional wushu and local cultural and creative products in Macao, turning the city into a large-scale stage for showcasing martial arts.
