Organized by the Sports Olympic Committee of Macau, China and the Sports Bureau, co-organized by the Youth Committee of Sports Olympic Committee of Macau, and co-supported by the Judiciary Police, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Macao Federation of Trade Unions, the Women's General Association of Macau, and the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, the “Olympic Gold Medalists Visit Macao Series - 2016 Meaningful Tour” has been held in December. The gold medalists from the National Badminton Team including Chen Long and Wang Shixian and former national gymnasts Li Ning, Li Xiaopeng, and Li Shanshan attended the Charity Walk for a Million of Macau, visited communities and schools, in order to have close communications with local people.
Seventeen Million Raised for Charity
This year marks the 33rd Walk for a Million, a large-scale yearly charity event in Macao. Nearly 40,000 people from all sectors of society like government agencies, enterprises, associations and schools have been attracted to participate and raised 17 million Macau dollars. To support and promote Macao's philanthropy, a group of coaches and gold medalists including Mr. Li Yongbo, Head Coach of the National Badminton Team, badminton players Chen Long, Zhang Nan, Fu Haifeng, Zhao Yunlei and Wang Shixian, Mr. Li Ning, China's “prince of gymnastics”, gold medalists Li Xiaopeng and Li Shanshan took part in the event to cheer other participants on, promote sports development and sportsmanship.
The route of the event started from the main rostrum beside the Kun Iam Statue, via Avenida da Republica at Sai Wan, and ended at the Barra Square. Dr. Fernando Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of Macao SAR and Mr. Edmund Ho Hau Wah, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC officiated the starting ceremony.
Visiting Communities and Schools
Moreover, the gold medalists paid a visit to the Mong Há Seniors' Center under Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Community Service Building of General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, School of Women's General Association of Macau, and Our Lady of Fatima Girl's School, had close communications with local elderly, students, and other citizens, shared with them and promoted the persistence and perseverance in sportsmanship, meanwhile stimulating teenagers' interest in sports.
