The Macao Football Team visited Myanmar on 27 March and finished the last match of the third round of qualifiers in the Asian Cup. Eventually, they lost 0:1 and officially completed their journey to the Asian Cup this year. They lost in all six matches and failed to score a single historic point. Neither could they achieve the objective to gain an historic win. However, with their willingness to face a challenge, they set a new high in Macao's football field. Cheang Cheng Ieong, the team leader, stated,“We have not lost anything, but we have gained a lot”.
Macao football team, which appeared in the third round of qualifiers in the Asian Cup for the first time, was categorized into Group A, where India, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar were also present. The Macao Team competed against Myanmar in the final match of the group. The players demonstrated their excellent abilities to execute instructions, high concentration and persistent will. They kept defending all along when being faced with offences made by the opponent. However, it was regrettable that in the 75th minute. Due to a mistake, the Macao team failed to defend themselves against the only goal shot by the home team.
Macao team won the first runner-up in the Solidarity Cup in 2016 and was qualified to compete in the third round of the qualifiers in the Asian Cup as an alternate team. They engaged in the first match in March 2017. A total of 39 players were enlisted in the six matches. Junior players were also included among them, empowering the football field in terms of its development.
