The new members of the Macao Wushu team have started to shine.17-year-old Cheung Ioi Chit began to learn Wushu in an interest class from school in 2008. Before officially learning Wushu, Cheung thought that Wushu was all-powerful and those who practises it looked so cool. He did not realize that Wushu is the essence of Chinese culture until he had learned it. The fact that the integration of strength and gentleness is emphasized in Wushu exercise is deeply attractive to Cheung.
Cheung, who is specialized in the traditional form of Wushu, Taolu, won silver in Group C in the broad sword event, when he competed in the World Junior Wushu Championship representing Macao for the first time in 2012. After that, he also won a silver and a bronze in the southern cudgel event in Group B in the World Junior Wushu Championship. Last year, he won a bronze in the southern boxing event and a gold in the southern broad sword event in Group A in the Asian Youth Wushu Championship. Cheung, who has rich experience in competitions, stated as he recalled the past that the most impressive experience for him was the World Junior Wushu Championship in Bulgaria in 2016, where he made a serious mistake in the southern broad sword competition. For him, this mistake was indeed a “lesson he paid for with blood”. At that time, he was so nervous that his palms sweated and he forgot to wipe off his sweat before the competition. In addition, he also had problems with the gesture of holding the sword. As a result, his southern broad sword flew off during the competition. This mistake has brought about a very impressive lesson to Cheung. Since then, he has become more detail-oriented and more self-aware of adjustment from time to time.
Cheung's passion for Wushu motivates him to receive training and overcome difficulties. So far, he has not been satisfied with his own results. He thinks that he still needs to keep on practising, hoping that he can get a better result on behalf of Macao.
