Sixteen-year-old Wong Son Ian is a competitive bowler from Macao. She won the 15-year-old-group in the Thailand Bowling Open consecutively in 2016 and 2017. She was also crowned champion in Group U15 and Group U18 in the Hong Kong Bowling Open in 2017. Six years ago, Wong learned bowling by joining a bowling school. At the beginning, she was not a big fan of this sport, and she only started learning because her parents requested it. However, she gradually fell in love with bowling.
The most attractive thing about bowling to Wong is that there are lots of variables in the field. It is hard, even for a skilful player, to ensure a win every time. Thus, players are required to perform well on the spot, and find the path to victory by adapting to the changes in the way that the ball may move.
Wong has a lot of experience in participating in a competition. She competed in the Asian Student Competition representing Macao for the first time when she was merely a Primary 6 student. After that, she won the 15-year-old-group in the Thailand Bowling Open, which raised excitement in her at that time. Since she has never performed that well before, she believes that her victory comes from the efforts she made in training, as well as the encouragement from the coach and teammates. In 2017, she accomplished even more. Not only could she defend her title, she also achieved a result of 3 golds and 2 bronzes in the Asian Student Competition, as well as two crowns in the Hong Kong Open. After that, she hopes that she can maintain her best condition and try her best to compete well in competitions such as the World Junior Competition and the Asian Games.
