The 2nd National Youth Games was held from August 8 to 18 in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province. The preliminaries of some events had started in April. In the course, 237 athletes and coaches formed Macao sports delegation to take part in eighteen competitive events, including swimming, track-and-field, badminton, canoe (still water), rowing, cycling (road, venue), fencing, judo, table tennis, shooting, tennis, karate, triathlon, handball, volleyball, basketball, football and martial arts. Dr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture and leader of the sports delegation, led the entire delegation to attend the opening ceremony. Ho Kai Pong, a karate athlete, and Wong Sam In, a martial arts athlete, won a gold and a bronze respectively.
In the final of the martial arts event, Wong Sam In, who had been a gold-medalist in the World Youth Championships, won a bronze with 9.35 points in the southern-styled boxing event, among all the other competitive athletes in Group A of the women's sports academy. This is also the first medal that Macao has won since Macao took part in the National Youth Games. Ho Kai Pong, who competed in the individual karate event in Group B of the men's sports academy, defeated Jiang Jiale, a contestant from Pudong, in the final and won the first gold for Macao.
Pun Weng Kun, President of the Sports Bureau and deputy leader of the delegation, is satisfied with the delegation's results. He thinks that the athletes have fully demonstrated Macao athletes' industriousness and persistence, stressing that the Macao SAR Government will continue to invest more resources in supporting young athletes into actualizing their dreams.
