Macao men's team wins bronze in Guangdong Volleyball competition
The Men's volleyball team, of the Volleyball Association of Macao, China participated in the volleyball competition, held from January 2 to 5, in Taishan, Guangdong Province. Macao defeated teams from Zhuhai, Kaiping and Dongguan in the first round-robin stage, and went on to win third prize in the match, beating Huazhou in straight sets before losing in the semi-final to Taishan home team.
The Macao men's volleyball team players come from different A-level teams, many of whom cooperated well after having played together in U19 and U20 leagues. The Macao's team, that participated in the volleyball competition at Guangdong Province, was led by opposite hitter Tam Chit Meng as captain, with veteran Leong Kuan Kin in attack, and young players Leong Ka Him, Chan Ka Lun and Ng Chin Long as outside-hitters. Other team members were middle-blockers Chong Wai Kit, Chan Chi Chon, Leng Ngai Tong and Lam Pak Lok, setters Kuan Ka Kit and rising star Ho Cheng Hou, and libero Kuan Wai, who guarded the backcourt.
With straight wins in the round-robin games, morale remained high for Macao's match against Huazhou, though it was not enough to defeat Taishan in the semi-final. Set one against Huazhou saw Macao strongly suppress their opponents and make good defences, closing out the set at 25-20. Set two ended 25-21, and set three saw some changes of team members before closing at 25-20, allowing Macao to beat Huazhou by 3 to 0 and take home the bronze.
