The 16th Asian Games will commence in Guangzhou in November this year. Following the Beijing Olympic Games, the Asian Games will give Macao residents another opportunity to participate in voluntary work at a large-scale sports event. Commissioned by the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee, the Macao Sport Development Board successfully recruited a group of local volunteers to join in the voluntary work of the Guangzhou Asian Games.
To train this group of volunteers, the Macao Sport Development Board arranged part of the group to participate in the voluntary work of the 2010 Macao Galaxy Entertainment FIVB World Grand Prix. Through the voluntary work of audience reception and venue guide service, volunteers could experience and personally involve themselves in the voluntary work of a large-scale sports event. While these short-listed volunteers were at work, Lu Shumin, Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in MSAR, Wei Jizhong, President of the FIVB, Vong Iao Lek, President of the Macao Sport Development Board and Vice Presidents José Tavares and Pun Weng Kun, visited them to express their support and encouragement.
In addition to arranging volunteers to participate in Macao’s large-scale event, the Macao Sport Development Board also organised a series of training programmes, including English language training, team training camp and general training provided by the Asian Games Organising Committee in Macao, etc. The Macao Sport Development Board hoped that this training would enable the volunteer group to accumulate related work experiences prior to their participation in the Asian Games and better equip them for the voluntary work of the Games, thereby jointly contributing to the success of the Games.
