Organized by the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, the China General Administration of Sport and the Special Olympics China, and hosted by the Fujian Provincial People’s Government, the 5th Special Olympics Games of the People’s Republic of China was held in the Fujian Provincial Sports Centre from 19th to 26th September.
The year’s Special Olympics adopted theme ‘Let’s go forward together under the sun’ and is the largest in scale with the greatest variety of games, including track and field, swimming, table tennis, badminton, bowling, football, bocce, roller skating, weightlifting, basketball and judo, some 11 games in all. All the games were contested in eight stadiums across Fuzhou City. Coming from 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Qizhi Taiwan - as well as invited delegations from the United States of America, Korea and Singapore - altogether some 39 delegations and 1,700 athletes participated in the Games. Participants competed tenaciously in all the sports, showing the world the spirit of the Special Olympics’ ‘happy participation, courageous attempt’.
This year marks the fourth time that the Macao SAR sports delegation has participated in the Games, sending 38 athletes to compete in seven sports events - including track and field, swimming, bocce, badminton, table tennis, bowling and football. In the Games, Macao participated in the greatest variety of sports events achieving the best results with 28 Gold Medals, 20 Silver Medals and 16 Bronze Medals - a total of 64 medals.
Results of Macao SAR sports delegation were shown as follows:
Track and field: 12 Gold Medals, 10 Silver Medals and 4 Bronze Medals
Swimming: 8 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal
Bowling: 3 Gold Medals and 3 Silver Medals
Badminton: 2 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and 2 Bronze Medals
Table Tennis: 2 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal and 5 Bronze Medals
Bocce: 1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals and 3 Bronze Medals
Football: 1 Bronze Medal
Total: 28 Gold Medals, 20 Silver Medals and 16 Bronze Medals
