The new star, Fong Man Wai, who might seem less advantaged due to her physical figure did her utmost to overcome her weaknesses. A month ago, she won a bronze successfully in the Okinawa Asian Youth Championship, which made her more confident in herself and motivated her to move forward. Pursuing tertiary studies in Taiwan China, she still maintains her passion for karate and will continue to practice vigorously, aiming to achieve brilliant results in competitions such as the Asian Youth Championship.
Her younger brother, Fong Man Hou, was also a member of the karate team. Fong Man Wai took this opportunity and started to learn about karate. As time goes by, she has been practicing karate for six years and has participated in numerous regional competitions, where she competed with strong opponents and represented Macao. Fong Man Wai thinks that her senior members Paula Cristina Pereira Carion and Kuan Man Fei have had the greatest influence upon her, since they have been helping her build up her basic techniques. Fong Man Wan recalled when she reached out and for the first time to engage in a competition, she faced against strong opponents and had always felt that she was doomed to lose even before fighting against them. However, she found that she probably had a chance to defeat her opponents as long as she was willing to take risks. She worked hard over these years and learned that she should not give up too easily when encountering obstacles. To persevere has become her attitude towards life.
Quite a number of young athletes fail to sustain their career when studying in university abroad and eventually opted to leave the athletic team. Fong Man Wai has overcome the difficulties with success as she still keeps training persistently although studying in Taiwan ,China. “Initially I failed to find the place for training and became less skilled. Fortunately, this problem was solved a few months later.”
Fong Man Wai, who is passionate about karate, chose to major in sports courses while she had not thought about being a full-time athlete.“I am a big fan of karate. I love sports so much but I don't expect myself to have karate only throughout my life. I still have other things to do.”
