Wan Ka Ieng, who had broke the 14-year record in the inter-school competition and drew much attention in the athletics field last year, endeavored to further improve her skills over the last year and set the record in the Macao women's junior category with the best individual result 5.27 meters. Next year, as she becomes a Form 6 student, she will strive to break Macao record 5.52 meters before she graduated. Her dream was to become the best in Macao women's long-jump event.
Wan Ka Ieong started to practise long-jump when she was a third-grader. Initially, she did it for interest only. However, with the guidance of the coach Ieong Choi Lin, she gradually improved her results. Last year, she broke the overall record in the inter-school event. She was determined to make another breakthrough in athletics.“I have never thought that I can make great accomplishments, but since I could exceed 5 meters and broke the record which had been set many years ago, I started to be confident in my ability and I want to put more effort in the long-jump event.
So far, Wan Ka Ieong's best result is 5.27 meters, making her the record keeper in the Macao junior category, but her goal was to challenge the Macao record 5.52 meters as set by Ng So Peng. For this, she will strive to overcome her shortcomings in the coming year in different ways, including adjusting the run-up rhythm and being adapted to the weightlessness. She hopes that she can perform her best in the competition,“My dream is to become the best female athlete in the long-jump event. This year, I will have the chance to compete in the Arafura Games 2019. I hope to continue doing my best”.
