Leong Kin Fong : With a Clear Target
The 24 year-old boxer Leong Kin Fong started boxing at the age 15. He saw boxing on TV and found it exciting, so tried his hand at it. Leong started to learn for fun only when he felt like it, sometimes putting training on hold for months. Later, by chance, Leong returned to the ring, and started to train with his coach and fellow trainees. It was then, that he finally became truly passionate about boxing.
Last year, he started fighting in Olympic style boxing matches, and won medals at many events including a silver in the 64 weight category at the Boxing Championship of the Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area 2018 (Shenzhen), a gold at the 2019 Macau Open Boxing Championships, a gold at the Asian Boxing Elite Tournament 2019 (Zhangzhou) and a silver at the 23rd President's Cup 2019 Boxing International Open Tournament.
The match that keeps coming back to Leong is the final of the 23rd President's Cup in Indonesia, where a powerful rival pressured him into passive defense. In the second half of the first round, Leong was down for a count of eight seconds, after a heavy punch. Although he later adjusted his fighting tactics, as instructed by his coach, Leong lost the game. However, he learned a lot from the match and was even more determined to continue down the path of boxing.
Although many matches have been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Leong continues to train at home with a focus on stamina, strength and responsiveness. He is hoping to return to professional training and enter the ring at his best when the pandemic is over.
