Upon the invitation of the Arafura Games Organising Committee, José Tavares, the Vice-President of the Macao Sport Development Board attended the Heads of Delegation Meeting of the “2011 Arafura Games” held in Hanoi city, Vietnam, on 31st January 2011.
The “2011 Arafura Games” will be held from the 7th to 14th of May this year in Darwin, Australia. At this Heads of Delegation meeting, attended by representatives from 13 countries and regions, including Australia, State of Brunei, Republic of Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, Macao SAR of China, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam; the Arafura Games Organising Committee reported the organizing progress of this year’s Games and representatives at the meeting exchanged their opinions regarding various detailed arrangements.
The “Arafura Games” is a multi-sport competition held every two years in Darwin, Australia, which targets to offer an exchange and development platform for the youth and athletes with potential from the Asia Pacific region. Many Asia Pacific countries and region have sent athletes to participate in this Games for many years, and Macao has been one of them since 1993, having taken part in the Games for 8 times in total. The Macao Sports Delegation, which is expected to consist of 200 people this year, will participate in 16 sports competitions at the “2011 Arafura Games” including athletics, basketball, boxing, football (soccer), golf, hockey, Muay Thai, sepak takraw, shooting-clay target, shooting-pistol, squash, table tennis, tenpin bowling, triathlon, volleyball and Paralympic events (athletics and table tennis).
